The Pier Cab Shelter Has Been Restored And Will Open Soon…but not to Taxi drivers….. As no parking facilities have been provided.
The shelter, has been restored by the Cabman’s shelter fund and a grant from the Heritage of London Trust, and will now open as a bijou cafe for the general public.
Situated on Chelsea Embankment, beside Albert Bridge, the Green Hut is an example of a later model, opened in 1910, and the only one not in use by cabbies.
'The Pier', nicknamed for its Thames-side location, fell into disrepair after the road was designated a red route.
With no parking available, it was no longer a convenient stop for cabbies. The shelter sat unused for almost 20 years.
David Fletcher created this amazing 3-D model of the shelter in its shabby state.
So, unless you own a black cab licence, or are good at blagging, this will be your only way to get food inside one of these historic structures. Taxi drivers won’t be able to use this historic place as the rest ranks have all been removed. Another erosion into the historic, iconic Taxi trade.
London’s surviving 12 shelters, remain off-limits to non-cabbies (though they do serve remarkably cheap drinks to the public via side-hatches, and you can sometimes sneak a look inside as part of Open House festival).
The hoardings at the pier came down on 7 January 2022, but it won't yet open as a cafe just yet, as a tenant is still being sought.

If the location is so unacceptable for a Cabman’s shelter…why has it not been moved to a more suitable location, like the Leicester Square shelter that was moved to Russell Square (so I’ve been informed)

It doesn’t end there though. There are reports that Taxi drivers are failing to support these wonderful places that have supported us for many years through thick and thin.
Please try to support the remaining shelters…. because if they go, they will be gone for good.
We need the London cab ranks committee to make sure the rest ranks are maintained otherwise we will see more shelters become bijou cafes.
We also need a recruitment drive to find staff and facilities for our night men who have nowhere left, after the closure of the places we used to be able to use 24hrs a day such as Camley Street and the Royal Oak.
