Since 2009 London’s Black Taxis have provided a free Poppy Cab taxi service for people attending the annual Remembrance service and parade on Sunday 14 November.
On Remembrance Sunday hundreds of London’s cabbies give up their time to provide the free Poppy Cabs service to help move veterans around London from train and tube stations to The Cenotaph for the service and the parade and this year Poppy Cabs is hoping more cabbies will volunteer.
Mike Hughes, Poppy Cabs Coordinator, said, “I expect this year’s event to be even more poignant as 2021 marks 100 years since the Royal British Legion was founded in 1921 and it will be the first opportunity for this parade to take place since the start of the COVID pandemic.
For many ex-service personnel it is the time when they not only remember those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom but is also a time for them to meet up with old comrades.
“In addition to looking after our WWII veterans this year, we also want to offer support to ninety family members who will be attending the parade from a special charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers. Scotty’s Little Soldiers was founded by Nikki Scott following the death of her husband in Afghanistan, for bereaved British Forces children and we really want to help them travel around the capital.
“Knowing that the Poppy Cab service is available, relieves much of the stress of attending this emotional event and I hope that even more cabbies and their families and friends will come forward to join us in volunteering for this much-loved important service.”

About Poppy Cabs
Poppy Cabs was founded in 2009. It is funded entirely by the drivers, often accompanied by family and friends as helpers, who provide their taxis in their own time and money.
The veterans who fought in WWII and are the main users of the Poppy Cabs service are in their 90’s and 100’s and can often be infirm or wheelchair users and the unique nature of the black cab fleet with their inbuilt wheelchair and disabled friendly access, are perfect to meet the needs of these heroes.
