Councils Accused Of Wasting Taxpayers Money On Badly Designed Cycle Lanes And Road Closures Which Have Increased Traffic

Just when you thought you’d seen it all, along comes the borough of Hounslow.

They have had to put cones around a lamp post that has had a cycle lane built around it, posing a danger to unsuspecting cyclists

This from a Facebook Chiswick residents group yesterday...

WARNING TO CYCLISTS:

The “geniuses” at TfL and LBH have had to put warning bollards around a street lamp which is actually inside CW9 at the Kew Bridge end of Chiswick High Road. I sincerely hope that no cyclist is injured by colliding with the street lamp. This photo was taken at 14:06 pm on Sunday 18th October 2020.

CW9 was empty at  the time even though it was a bright dry day.

One of the residents left the comment

“I wouldn’t worry too much the few that ride that way usually ride on the pavement”.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps now admits that too many new cycle lanes are 'unused' leaving streets 'backed up' with traffic....even though the routes were built using £250m fund HE unveiled.

In a statement released at the weekend Shapps declared:

He was 'not prepared to tolerate' badly designed road closures. He also vented his fury at cycle lanes that impose 'sweeping changes' to communities.

The comments were made even though many lanes were built from fund Shapps himself had unveiled as part of his greener streets policy.

The idea was that councils could apply for cash for projects to “entice” people away from their cars.

The Sunday Telegraph reported yesterday, how critics had complained that most of the money had been spent on badly designed road closures and new cycle lanes that effectively increased traffic, and threatened the livelihood of local businesses.

There have also been protests that because the schemes were introduced under emergency Covid powers, disability groups, local residents and businesses were not consulted directly.

High streets struggling to recover from the lockdown were also affected, with the number of people visiting them was reduced, it was claimed.

In the letter sent on Friday, Mr Shapps appeared to admit the problems – blaming a 'notable number of councils' for using 'their funding poorly'.

He added: 'I have heard about far too many instances where temporary cycle lanes were unused due to their location and design, while their creation left traffic backed up alongside them'.

The Transport Secretary explained how he has since ordered his staff to work with local councils, adding: 'Numerous schemes have now been scaled back and revised’
