Parliamentary inquiry into the future of London’s taxi trade, chaired by Ilford North MP Wes Streeting, is inviting black cab drivers to have their say.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Taxis, meeting for the first time today, will examine whether enough is being done to protect the public, and to determine whether an overhaul of current taxi regulations is necessary.
To do that most effectively, they are hoping black taxicab drivers across London will get involved with the group over the next month.
Mr Streeting said: “The issues facing the taxi industry in London and right across the UK need serious action, and we hope that this inquiry will add to the debate about what the trade will look like in the future.
“I know that in London the black cab is an icon that everyone would like to see continue to serve our capital.
“We welcome submissions from Taxi drivers across the UK alongside the expert witnesses we will have contributing to the inquiry.”
The APPG will hear three evidence sessions – today’s on public safety before taking a look at the effectiveness of current regulation on March 14.
They will then reconvene on March 28 for their final session on the future of the taxi trade.
Written contributions to the inquiry can be sent to: APPGTaxi@newingtoncomms.co.uk

Semtex.
Ask the committee if they are any good at closing doors after wayward horses have wandered.
Heard it all before. Nothing more than stalling for time until they say "well we all wish we could go back to the way it was, but its too late now".
Only enquiry needed is if uber run a legitimate business obeying rules and regulations required as a transport operator, if the answer is NO ,simple renawal of liscense should be denied...TFL uphold the law with is set in stone no ifs or buts no grey areas..DO YOUR JOB!
Another talking shop, time would be better spent looking into TfL and the Mayor's inaction.
Let's be clear, Leon Daniels 'Dear Jo' email gave the game away along with non enforcement of TfL's arlraedy laughable weak regulations,, no landline, office permissions, bogus insurance, bogus medicals, cross border piracy, all made it clear for anyone (Government, M.P's) who cared to see it that an agenda existed to destroy the world finest taxi trade along with legitimate PH.
All seemingly at the behest of a tax avoiding, predatory multinational mired in allegations worldwide, why on why do TfL seem powerless or unwilling to act in any meaningful way?
So Wes and co.Iif your going to look at the heart of the problem first stop Windsor House, it's a 5 minute walk from the Gasworks!
Good intentions...shame its not 2012, the damage is already done.
Looks like I have a new focus, and that will be to educate this panel on the industry and what is required....
