It's the last day of the TfL consultation on credit card acceptance on Friday. Perhaps someone can explain to me how TfL are going to force me to give people credit ?
Personally (and at my discretion) I currently take all forms of credit cards using either iZettle Chip & Pin or the new Cab:App applications. I do this as a courtesy. They can have as many consultations as they like, but under current legislation, TfL can not make card acceptance mandatory.
How many drivers tweeted they had followed a yellow badge past dozens of touting minicabs to get an ID badge number and a photo for TfL's enforcement to ignore.
Now TfL are seriously in trouble they've hurriedly slung the credit card debate on the table.
Drivers who used to complain about yellow badges are now glory tweeting:

What they can do is add a fitted credit card reader to the conditions of fitness. Hand held machines would more than likely be deemed unauthorised.
And it will be a waste of time putting a plastic bag over them because there will be a monthly rental fee that will be charged by Direct Debit whether you use the equipment or not. TfL intend to do away all customer surcharges, just watch the percentage rise when machines are mandatory.
Again this doesn't smell right:
Remember the mantra, follow the money !
Remember the over priced Euro 4 conversions that you could only have done at a certified TfL garage !
Remember the expensive fitted printers from the meter companies which in truth the customers didn't like, didn't want !
So, is this another case of follow the money, or is there something more devious afloat here !
Many drivers are frightened by technology and I believe if one of our trade orgs (or union) were to set up some form of technology classes, when they are shown how simple it can be, more drivers would join Twitter and more would start taking cards voluntarily.
IS THIS ANOTHER CASE OF DIVIDE AND CONQUER:
First we had the engagement policy which divided the trade and kept us fighting amongst ourselves while the Olympic mess went down.
TfL flooded certain suburbs with new yellow badge drivers, scare stories were placed in trade media, ensuring the issue of ID cards which again distracted us and threw us into a brainwashed virtual state of civil war, while TfL escalated unlawful operator licenses and set about flooding the market with PH drivers, unnoticed.

This trade stands the three card trick every time.

DIRTY TRICKS
A covert attempt to rubbish the good name of the trade has been discovered. Social media accounts have been set up with some impersonating taxi drivers. They then start putting out disruptive and malicious statements.
The Mayfair Mob uncovered a ringer Tuesday night who has been Posting disparaging tweets, designed to enflame. They have now instructed all their members to block this account, not to be confused with the original @Essex_Exile.
Previously, we though this new wave of abuse could be coming from a certain American connection but we've uncovered a young consultant with close links to TfL, who has allegedly been slagging off certain females on FaceBook. There could be many more examples.
Don't fall for this underhanded black ops PR.
Regarding the CC consultation, be very careful what you wish for as you are being coached by people with vested interests.

Again, there are people who stand to make a lot of money on the backs of ordinary, hard working, rank and file licensed Taxi drivers.

I'm a yb and your the only person to tell it how it is on yb bullying, cc machines and all the other bollox that's going on in this trade. Well done and be lucky
Too bad, In this era this is very difficult to find honest people. May GOD grant him honesty
What a happy coincidence that you have posted on the subject of credit card acceptance, as I have just filled in the TFL consultation.
For what its worth I think we should all accept credit cards, but I would like to share with you the comments I made at the end of the consultation.
The loaded question (or perhaps the most loaded question) was number 6. which asked 'If passengers should be able to pay be debit or credit card in taxis where possible should additional costs that drivers incur be taken into consideration when reviewing taxi fares.
A. Yes
B. No
C. No Opinion
D. Don't know
How on earth do you answer that, I therefore did not answer for the reasons given within my comments given at the end of the consultation which were as follows;
1. It would be unfair to increase the meter to cover the costs of renting credit card equipment, because why should passengers that prefer to pay cash be surcharged.
2. In my experience most passengers are not to worried about paying a fee to use their card. I do think 10% is excessive on higher fares. As I stated in an earlier answer 10% up to a maximum of £2.00 is reasonable and is broadly in line with ticket agencies etc. This should make it viable for card machine suppliers to supply their machines without imposing costs onto the drivers, and imposing extra meter costs onto passengers who pay cash (as stated above in my 1st point).
3. I have not answered question 6 as I feel this is a loaded question. I cannot answer YES as I don't believe, for the reasons stated above, that additional costs should be loaded onto the metered fare. I cannot answer NO as I feel this would mean that the Card Suppliers would charge drivers directly for using their equipment. I cannot say that I have 'no opinion' as quite clearly the points I have made above mean that I do have an opinion. I cannot say 'Don't know' because that would negate all the opinions I have given above.
Obviously the public will say no as they will not vote to pay a higher fare given the choice. This leaves one outcome that would force the drivers to pay suppliers to use their equipment without recompense. That is why 10% up to a maximum of £2.00 is reasonable and fair to all.
4. Taxi Drivers should not be forced to have fixed equipment but should have the choice to use mobile technology, i'zettle, paypal, or through any of the various taxi apps available. Otherwise there will be few suppliers and little competition which will only increase costs.
5. Many drivers are worried that TFL will force a certain type of fixed system upon them and deny them the choice that they prefer. If a passenger prefers to pay by card they are not particularly worried about what system the driver has in place to pay them with. Drivers are also worried that extra costs will be incurred by them should TFL limit their choice. Drivers are also worried that TFL will only allow approved suppliers which will further limit choice and can only push costs higher as it does in any monopoly situation. These are valid concerns and should be taken into consideration.
Will they take any notice (that's a rhetorical question) but the consultation ends tomorrow (Friday 24th). Feel free to copy and paste my comments if you agree with them and feel inclined to do so.

Does TfL have the power to bring in this compulsory CC/DC acceptance as it needs primary legislation?
i pay my tax to the penny and always have so i dont care AND YOU
Anon 1:38
TfL can not make CC mandatory without a change to current law
So short answer is no they can't.
I see the article itself was too complicated for Anon 5:32.
Another driver with his head up his own arse
Although more than likely a scab tout, in fact described perfectly in the post.
